The Goodall and Motion Family History by Bill Goodall

Introduction

This account of the Goodall and Motion families will involve considerable research into scarce material and it will reveal a weakness which I imagine to be not unusual in family histories. I refer to the failure of the younger generation to talk to their older relations about the family when these relatives were still alive. It has been a recurring regret that I failed in this respect and consequently this narrative will be lacking much information which would have been available to me in the 1920's and 1930's.

I propose to deal with each family separately because they did not come together closely until my own parents married in 1912; in fact they lived in close proximity in the Glasgow suburb of Dennistoun. I have been able to find a small amount of material in the form of press cuttings, photos, and a few documents all of which helped considerably to illustrate what I will be able to write. I have not forgotten that the Davie connection is equally important but the only person qualified to tackle that angle is Dorothy Davie or DD as you have come to know her. [Dorothy Swanson has now (December 1999) written a short account of her family memories which is also published on this website]

The Goodall Family

Not long ago Ian discovered [on a 'scroll' presented to his son Alan on his 21st birthday, 27 June 1990] a genealogical study of the family name which placed its origins, somewhat dubiously, with the Vikings. However, I cannot claim any knowledge, or even legend, which would take us back beyond the mid 19th century.

My Grandfather, William Simpson Goodall, was born 1851 and brought up in Milnathort, the son of David Goodall, who is described on a death certificate as an Estate Overseer. I'm not sure what this title signifies but it cannot have meant a prosperous upbringing for young William. He was not quite the traditional Scots lad who was admitted to University at the start of the year with a bag of meal to see him through until the end of term.
