The Goodall and Motion Family History by Bill Goodall

Grandmother Goodall had nine children of whom five died in infancy and the survivors were:-
William Simpson Goodall, my Father (1881-1959)
                 John James Goodall (1883-1934)
                 Elizabeth Simpson Goodall (1887-1934)
                 Alexander Galt Goodall (1891-1941).

My Goodall Grandparents were married at 7 London Street in the New Town of Edinburgh in 1877 and some time ago I went to see the location; it seemed to me that the street can hardly have changed in over 100 years.

They had four children, beginning with my Father, born in 1881. It is difficult to write about one's parents but they were married in the Grand Hotel at Charing Cross Glasgow in 1912. The Hotel was demolished some years ago and they would be astonished at the appearance of Charing Cross today. My Mother was Kate Kennedy Young Motion and I shall have more to write about her when I get to the Motion family.

My Father was a very quiet and gentle man but we never became very close for some reason which I cannot pin point and I am sure that he didn't have an enemy in the World. I am also sure that theirs was a very happy marriage for nearly 50 years.

Father went to Glasgow High School and became a clerk in a City Office until about 1905 when he did what many a Scot has done over the years and moved to London. There he joined the Cannon Brewery in Clerkenwell and remained there for the rest of his working life until retirement as Company Registrar at the age of 70. As I mentioned earlier, I find it difficult to write about him and for whom I had real affection.
