The Goodall and Motion Family History by Bill Goodall

He was called up to the Army in 1917 but did not serve overseas - he was posted to Grantham and York to both of which Mother & I followed; I can vaguely remember both locations. My sister Catherine Goodall was born in York in January 1919 just before Father was demobilised and that occasion remains in my mind as a happy time when the end of the war was such a great relief.

The re-united family then moved to Ilford in Essex which in those days was at the edge of open country. We remained in Ilford, first in Balfour Road and then in Blenheim Avenue, until 1939 when Moira and I were married. During the following year Mother & Father moved to Rickmansworth as the Cannon Brewery office staff was evacuated owing to the bombing of London. After the war, having sold the Blenheim Avenue house for a pittance, they lived in Muswell Hill [North London] until Father retired and they moved to Bournemouth.

Father died there in 1959 and Mother then went to live at Blandford [Forum] to be near Catherine. She died there very suddenly in 1965 while out shopping on her 83rd birthday; I loved her very dearly and her death was the first one which affected me deeply. In a different context I should perhaps mention Jack Patteson, my pilot during the war, who gave his life to save his crew when we were shot down; his death too was a great blow.

Looking back I can see that Catherine and I were very fortunate in our parents and our upbringing - both Mother and Father were strict about our behaviour but always with a smile so that it was a happy house.

Returning to the Goodall family I must now mention the other three children of my Grandparents beginning with Jack who was 2 years younger than my Father. He was employed by the Burma Oil Co and spent some years in Burma before the First World War. Jack Goodall married Chrissie Anderson and they lived in the same house in Scotstounhill throughout their married life.
