The Motions of Scotland by James Motion

A theory into our origins by James Motion

THE QUEBEC MOTIONS

I have believed for a long time that the family in Quebec who were known as Motion in the later half of the 1600s could have held important clues to the origins of the Scottish Motions. Both of these families, in Quebec and Scotland are around at the same time, so they are clearly two different family groups. There are only 6 entries for the name of Motion in Quebec from 1669 to 1762.

They are as follows -

1. The christening of Jean Baptiste Motion on the 11 December 1669, Quebec.
Parents - Robert Motion & Anne Fournier
2. The christening of Anne Motion on the 15 July 1674, Quebec.
Parents - Robert Motion & Anne Tavernier
3. The christening of Robert Motion on the 17 December 1676, Quebec.
Parents - Robert Motion & Anne Tavernier
4. The marriage of Robert Motion & Elisabeth Chegnier on the 13 July 1712, Quebec.
     (Robert as number 3 above)
5. The christening of Robert Motion on the 27 July 1713, Quebec.
Parents - Robert Motion & Marie Elisabeth Chesnier
6. The marriage of Marie Louise Motion to Charles Valliere on the 11 May 1762, Quebec.

All of these records can be found on the International Genealogical Index (IGI), which was compiled by the Mormon Church from the original Church records. As you can see numbers 1 to 3 are before the first mention of Motion in Scotland. Numbers 4 to 6 are running parallel with the Motions in Scotland, this fact clearly indicates that these are two separate Motion families, one in Quebec and one in Scotland.
