A theory into our origins by James Motion The wife's name on number 1 is wrong for I believe she should be Anne Tavernier instead of Anne Fournier, but leaving that aside for the moment I think that there is very little doubt that all the people were in fact Motions, or at least known as Motion. Going back to Robert Motion and Anne Tavernier, there is no record of the birth of Robert and his marriage to Anne Tavernier, not under the name of Motion at any rate. To find these records you would have to look at Robert's French name/s. Robert was born in 1643 in Ains, Poitiers, France. He married Anne Tavernier on the 15 May 1666 in Quebec. The name, which is recorded for both events is - MOSSION. However this wasn't the only name by which he was known by, for on the 1666 Quebec city census he is recorded under the name of - MOUSSION dit LAMOUCHE, his age is giving as 24, which would have put his birth around 1642, so that fits with his birth record. His occupation is listed as a Tailor and he is married to a 24 year old Anne Tavernier. The census record fits in with the above birth and marriage records, so there can be little doubt that they are all the same people, but there is more, much more. The following is a list of the children that I've found concerning this couple, and under various different variants. 1.
Flavie Anne Moussion - Christened 29 June 1667, Quebec. Out of these 6 children we find that there are 4 different variants of their surname. We have - Moussion, Motion, Lamouche Mosion and Mosion, we also have Robert (the father) being recorded as Mossion as well. It would seem that they are all variants of the same name, they certainly sound they same (try it with a French accent). I would like you to pay particular attention to number 4 of the above, notice that his Christening date is the same as number 3 on Page 6, both have the same parents, but the father is listed as either Motion or Mosion, this Robert (1676) also crops up in the next generation, again listed under various names. We find that his marriage is recorded 3 times, but under different names. All the dates and places are exactly the same - 13 July 1712, Quebec. 1.
Robert Motion & Marie Elisabeth Chegnier I would think that there is no real doubt that these 3 entries all refer to the same couple. |
