The Motions of Scotland by James Motion

A theory into our origins by James Motion

We also find the same thing happening with their son Robert, born in 1713 (as number 5 on Page 6)

Again the date and places are exactly the same - Christened 27 July 1713, Quebec.

1. Robert Motion - Parents Robert Motion & Elisabeth Chesnier
2. Robert Mosion - Parents Robert Mosion & Elisabeth Chenier

The other children of Robert & Marie Elisabeth are also recorded under various different variants, however it is only Robert (1713) which is recorded under the name of Motion. It is also clear that there was more than one person who recorded these events, as the first mention of Motion in Quebec was in 1669 and the last in 1762, this is a period of 97 years. It would seem likely that there were at the very least 2 or 3 different people who recorded these events for the church, and everyone, of them made the same mistake, recording these peoples name as Motion.

Looking at what we now know about the Scottish Motions and putting together this information concerning the Quebec Motions, we can start to see pattern emerging. Running the names of - Moussion, Mossion, Mosion etc, through the IGI, we find that there isn't a single reference to any of them for Scotland, it is only in France, Quebec and a few other locations in which these names are mentioned. Working the opposite way, when we run the name of Motion through the IGI, we find that it is only in Scotland and the one in England and none in France. There are other entries for Motion, but these are much later in time than the period that I'm dealing with here, furthermore I can identify exactly who these people were and their lineage and they all came from the Scottish Motions. The other place in which there is an entry for Motion, other than the above mentioned, is one entry in Germany

Maria Magdalena Motion, who was christened on the 4 August 1795 in Katholisch, Gerderath, Rheinland, Preussen. Maria's parents are giving as - Petri Motion & Mariae Nivine.

However we also find this entry from 3 years later.

Maria Theresia Isabella Mossion, christened on the 27 February 1798 in Sankt Anna Katholisch, Dusseldorf Stadt, Rheinland, Preussen. Parents - Petri Mossion & Maria Nivinet.

I would say that these parents are one and the same couple in both entries, only the spellings are different.
